Olajide Omotayo crashed in Tokyo on Saturday, knocking down an ongoing 2020 Olympic men’s table tennis single.
The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) says Portuguese Tiago Apolonia humiliated Omotayo from a 0-4 loss.
Apolonia made his light accomplishment when he destroyed Omotayo in four straight sets 11-7 11-9 11-6 11-5 in the early round of the event.
NAN says Omotayos’ defeat meant a total of four Nigerian athletes had fallen out of the Tokyo Olympics by the end of the official first day’s procedure.
Previously, Esther Tamaramiyebi Toko (rowing), Olufunke Oshonaike (table tennis) and Uche Eke (artistic gymnastics) were dropped in the opening round of various events.
Only one athlete, Offiong Edem (table tennis), advanced to the next women’s table tennis round when she threw his Hungarian opponent Dora Madarasz in a 4-1 opening round.
The pair of Godwin Olofuan and Anuoluwapo Opeyor lost their opening game in the badminton men’s singles, but they still have other matches.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, whose official opening opened on Friday, is expected to end on August 8th.
