Google’s time crystals could be the greatest scientific achievement of our life: Futurology

I appreciate the enthusiasm of the authors, but I think this metaphor is a bit misleading.

The actual experiment involved electrons flip over between different spin states as energy was fired at them by a laser. The nice thing is that even though energy is required from the laser, the electrons emit all of it, so none are actually consumed by periodic spin flipping.

I wouldn’t want anyone to read this and think that time crystals are possible without an energy source – they are not perpetual motion machines.

Also, I wouldn’t want anyone to think they could send things back and forth in time, as the metaphor of consuming the cake and making it magically reappear would imply. There is no entropy inversion (or anything like time travel) here.

However a very interesting experiment!
