The Final Fantasy 14 icon has changed after complaints from players with trypophobia

Sage is one of the new jobs coming to Final Fantasy 14 as part of the Endwalker expansion, a class of healers that fights with four floating blades called noulith. His icon represents those four weapons, and the designers of the MMO probably didn’t expect him to receive as strong a reaction as he did.

“When we released new details about Sage and Reaper on the special site, we also included their icons,” wrote producer and director Naoki Yoshida in an update, “not thinking they were particularly big revelations. However, we soon received feedback from the players. around the world, who told us that the sage icon made them uncomfortable or scared. “

It is due to trypophobia, an irrational aversion to clusters of small irregular holes. Since all articles on the internet are obliged to mention, it is not a condition recognized by medical science. But if you’ve ever seen a photo of lotus pods or Suriname toads (the ones whose young hatch from a honeycomb of pockets embedded in their backs) and felt your skin crawl, you understand the sensation. The theory is that it’s tied to our inherent fears of insect infestations and rotting flesh, and the photoshops transposing hole patterns to human skin definitely make me wish I didn’t google them. But then I think the holes in the scones make them look disgusting.

However, the original design of the Sage icon inspired a thread on the Japanese FF14 forum which is currently 24 pages long. It turns out that people have strong feelings for things that look like a bunch of holes (the design of the iPhone 11 Pro’s three camera lenses had a similar effect).

The redesigned icon retains the concept of four levitating blades, but no longer emphasizes the holes in them. “The design concept is unchanged,” wrote Yoshida, “with the icon based on the four noulites forming the sage’s armament. The holes in the original design were added for detail, but ended up looking like a lump. . To address the problem, the new icon reduces the holes by accentuating the design concept. Now, comparisons will inevitably be made and some of you may prefer the original. But we believe that designs like this are things that grow on you as do the work, and ask for your understanding as we make our way to Endwalker. “

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker is scheduled for release on November 23rd.
