After two days of competition, where schools had to build their designs from scratch, Obuasi SHTS impressed the jury with its automated sanitation station to be declared the winner.
Their winning innovation was a complex system that used an ultrasonic sensor, an immersion water pump, an electromagnetic switch, and an Arduino to ensure minimal physical contact during sanitation.
The winners, Obuasi SHTS, amassed 307 points and left with a whopping GH20,000 for the team (students and teachers), as well as GH10,000 for school science equipment.
For finishing second with 293 points, Aggrey Memorial SHS earned 17,000 GHC for the team and 8,000 GHC of school science equipment. The Aggrey Memorial SHS innovation was a healthcare assistant robot designed to help deliver drugs and food to COVID-19 patients.
Prempeh College, which was runner-up with 290 points, also received 15,000 GH for the team and 5,000 GH for school science equipment. COVSAM: Covid-19 Safety Protocols Station, it was the innovation that earned him the place.
With a host of innovative ideas, the remaining seven schools each received a consolation prize of 5,000 GH each, of which 4,000 GH went to the team and the school received 1,000 GHC of scientific equipment.
Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) was ranked 4th with 289 points for its Smart Sanitizing Station, which uses ultrasonic sensors and robotics to automate hand washing and sanitation.
In 5th place, Sunyani’s Don Bosco Technical Institute amassed 267 points for its hand washing machine which used audio messages to ensure COVID protocols were properly secured.
The only girls’ school to participate, Archbishop Porter Girls SHS, finished 6th with 262 points for the Archumidifier, a steam humidifier designed to introduce moisture into the atmosphere that prevents mucus from thickening and helps lashes trap the COVID-19 virus.
The team of Louis Rutten SHS, based in Wa, designed the COVID-19 Protocols Assistant (CPA), another automated complete sanitation station, to earn 255 points and position itself in seventh place. Mfantsipim School was ranked eighth with 251 points for its e-learning platform called COVINFO.
Coming ninth, Sekyedumase SHS managed to accumulate 240 points for its automated door / temperature sensor. In 10th place, with 231 points, St. Thomas Aquinas SHS designed ‘Cashbot’, an automated currency exchange system to reduce physical contact during transactions.
Speaking on behalf of the organizers, Ms. Nana Akua Ankomah-Asare, Chief Executive Officer of Primetime Limited, thanked the sponsors, schools and teachers for helping to make the program such a success.
In his speech, he said organizers hope more institutions will come together to support the Sci-Tech Fair in the coming years. ”
The Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge was introduced after three editions of the Sci-Tech Fair were held annually as an exhibition platform primarily for scientific and technological innovations from across the country.
The challenge was designed to introduce a competitive element and increase the practical impact of the Sci-Tech Fair.
This year, the Sci-Tech Fair was decoupled from the National Science & Maths Quiz and merged with mentoring sessions to give life to the inaugural edition of the STEM Festival, a month-long celebration of innovation and science.
The 2021 STEM Festival is proudly sponsored by Absa Bank Ghana Limited, with the support of Academic City University College, Junior Camp Ghana, Joy News, Joy Learning and YFM.
