According to a new rumor, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 could support both Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant and Google Assistant.
Although we knew the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 would likely inherit some fun benefits from Google’s Wear OS now that he and Samsung have teamed up on Wear OS 3, the OS introduced at Google IO 2021. We hadn’t heard many specifics about the new features. that would be shared, so getting the Google Assistant on the watch is an exciting possibility.
In a response to a tweet from 9to5Google about the Galaxy Watch 4, leaker SnoopyTech said the watch would have Google Assistant and Bixby:
As explained by 9to5Google in the follow-up coverage, in the Wear OS app code there is a reference to support for an “alternative assistant, which is an alternative to the Google Assistant”. There is also evidence that the alternative, which could be Bixby or perhaps another voice assistant like Amazons Alexa, could get its own tile in the Wear OS launcher.
Analysis: What else can Wear OS add from Samsung?
When Google introduced its partnership with Samsung to merge their wearable operating systems, we wondered what tangible benefits users would see. When it was introduced during the Google IO 2021 keynote, the collaboration was tied to a series of OS updates, including 30% faster app launches, better battery life, and smoother app transitions.
But a post-keynote development session explained that there would be a lot of backend improvements as well. Some of these would facilitate the user experience, such as faster business switching, easier ways for app makers to create tiles, expanding Google Pay for Wear to more countries and metropolitan areas.
Other potential updates seemed more tangible, including a function to return to the most used app by double tapping the function button on a smartwatch, a Google Maps update that allows for offline navigation, more robust health information shared between apps via API, and color matching your other Android devices via Android 12s Material You’s new cross-platform sync.
What else could Samsung bring to Wear OS 3? A stronger ecosystem idea, for example: Samsung smartwatches have been configured to interface better with other products such as the Samsung Galaxy Buds. Heck, even the DeX app for Samsung smartphones and tablets is designed to expand the reach of product families across multiple devices, with its latest version allowing Samsung Galaxy S21 phones to wirelessly connect to external displays.
Whether this interconnectivity can extend to smartwatches is anyone’s guess, but we were excited to see what else the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 with Wear OS 3 can achieve – and we won’t have to wait long, as we expect the wearable to launch on Samsung Unpacked in August. 11.
