Business Planet travels to Ireland to check out an online hub that is creating new investment opportunities for EU-backed research and innovation.

RedZinc is a specialist in video telemedicine. Its software and wearable cameras allow doctors to remotely connect with both patients and each other in real time.

Award-winning technology, which can be used in hospitals and in remote locations, proved crucial during the pandemic, helping healthcare professionals improve diagnosis and treatment, all remotely.

Donal Morris, the company’s CEO and founder admits the pandemic was a stepping stone.

“We started with wearable videos for paramedics for physicians on the go. Now it has expanded to recovery room support and COVID isolation.”

Senior officials from the Irish health service say the technology is helping to revolutionize the way care is provided.

“This technology is creating the opportunity to transform healthcare in times of need. For example, thanks to this technology, a paramedic can now, in real time, initiate a video call with an emergency room consultant and together they can access jointly to the patient and decide on the next steps, ”says Martin Curley, director of digital transformation and innovation at Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE).

Investment opportunity

RedZinc obtained two million euros under the European Horizon 2020 program. But more recently, thanks to an online hub called the Horizon Results Platform, it was able to meet and propose private investors.

Morris says the platform has been very beneficial to his business. “It allowed us to connect with investors from all over Europe. But more importantly, it allowed us to prepare our business for investors.”

As a result, RedZinc is now available on the Spark crowdfunding platform. The goal is to grow the business.

“At the forefront of innovation”

The Horizon platform promotes all EU funded research and innovation. It aims to build a bridge between Europe’s most innovative startups and private investors looking for new opportunities.

Cyril Demaria is a fund manager. He told us about how useful the platform is for investors. He says it’s great because it provides a kind of one-stop shop that covers a wide range of opportunities that he can then filter through. It also gives him pan-European coverage that he doesn’t usually get.

Another advantage of the Horizon Results platform, according to Demaria, is its “detailed insight into what is happening at the heart of European technology”.

Companies are able to use the platform to improve and continue their development. In the case of RedZinc, the company is now looking to expand. It is also actively seeking to address the backlog of medical education programs that stalled across Europe during the pandemic.
