Conceptualize the Saagu Baagu project to transform the agricultural value chain with emerging technology
The Telangana government is ready with an expression of interest document (EoI), which is expected to issue within fifteen days, to select partners to implement a vision of transforming the value chain of agriculture through innovative technological solutions.
The goal is to engage appropriate project implementation partners (PIPs) and their consortia of agricultural ecosystem actors to demonstrate and establish the transformational potential of innovative technology solutions along the value chain, the minister’s office said. IT KT Rama Raos in a statement here Tuesday.
At the heart of this move is Saagu Baagu, a project conceptualized as part of a flagship initiative called AI for Agriculture Innovation (AI4AI) to transform the state of agriculture by implementing emerging technologies in a scalable, inclusive and sustainable way. The project seeks to involve at least one lakh of farmers in four crop cycles and to establish sufficient availability to scale it across the state.
The Department of Agriculture, with the support of the State Agricultural University (PJTSAU), the Department of Informatics and the World Economic Forum, is leading the Saagu Baagu project. Mr. Rao had launched AI4AI in August 2020 in continuation of a state government collaboration with C4IR India, the World Economic Forum and a cross section of the agritech industry and start-up community.
Within AI4AI, nine frameworks and 30 use cases were identified along four parts of the agriculture value chain: crop planning, smart farming, farm-to-table and data-driven farming. While the Saagu Baagu project will be a five-year effort, the role of the PIPs will be for two years or 3-4 crop cycles in multiple districts of selected priority crops such as cotton, chilli and turmeric for the kharif season and peanuts, gram of Bengal and paddy for the season of anger. Each PIP, together with its consortium, is required to propose at least five distinct use cases across the crop value chain to ensure holistic implementation and not just a conventional single use case pilot approach.
IT Secretary Jayesh Ranjan said adopting the technology is the only sustainable approach to improving the lives of farmers and the same must be facilitated under Saagu Baagu. For the project, a public-private cooperation framework has been finalized whereby the government will establish a supportive environment in partnership with state institutions, which would address challenges and accelerate the adoption and use of agritech use cases. , said the office of ministers.
