Xbox boss shuts down idea of game pass coming to other platforms (again)

Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently gave an interview to GamesRadar on everything related to Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem. Once again, the question of bringing Game Pass to other platforms, such as Nintendo Switch, has been raised.

Phil responded with the same answer as to how he wants to deliver the “full Xbox experience” on these platforms, but the platforms themselves refuse to cooperate. As a result, there are currently no “plans” to bring the Xbox or Xbox Game Pass app to these “closed” systems.

“People usually ask me to release an individual game or another. And what I say is that I want the full Xbox experience to be something we offer. We have no plans to bring it to any other kind of closed platforms right now,” mainly because those closed platforms don’t want something like Game Pass. There are a lot of open platforms out there that we can grow on: web, PC and mobile. So our whole focus, frankly, is on those platforms. “

Spencer went on to explain how he can understand why these other platforms might not want something like Game Pass, but he also said it’s not a dead end yet, as the team is “totally open” to discussions in the future.

“It’s not a slam on anyone else who has a system that works for them. I can understand why discontinuing Game Pass isn’t something they want right now. In the end, when we say we want everyone to play on Xbox, we really mean. that if we can bring that full experience to a device that gamers want, we’re totally open to such discussions. “

Phil previously explained how the “other competitive platforms” don’t seem to care about having the full Xbox experience on their hardware.

Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser was also asked if his company would bring Game Pass to the Switch last December and danced around the question with the following answer:

“We are always looking for various ways we can engage our consumers right now. We have found that our catalog and third-party publication catalog available, both via Nintendo Switch Online and via frontline game purchase. , they really let us do that. “

Earlier this year, it was noted in leaked Apple vs. Epic, that Xbox hadn’t given up on bringing its gaming subscription service to platforms like Switch.

As friendly as the relationship between the Xbox division and Nintendo of America may seem, as Phil puts it, it seems other platforms aren’t interested in the idea. Phil also got his hands on a Steam Deck this week when he visited Gabe Newell at Valve HQ and noticed how great it was for games like Halo and Age of Empires.
