The multiplayer assets seemingly buried in The Last of Us Part 2 suggest that Naughty Dog may have plans to release a battle royale game set within the iconic gaming universe.
Content creator Speclizer, an established “modding and exploration” expert, appears to have discovered a number of multiplayer assets in The Last of Us Part 2 that point towards a battle royale mode built with the same engine. The most telling of these, according to their video (below) is a map that according to the creator would be used in multiplayer modes.
Other assets were also found in the files, such as Device in Listening Mode, Collar, Portable TV, and various multiplayer backpacks and armor (although the creator was unable to restore them all at the time of writing).
The video postulates that Adler Park, Camallito, and Port of Camallito would be shattered together to create a large map that would accommodate large numbers of players at one time. “I didn’t mention it in the video, but in the development footage, there is a compass and player count that are usually only used in battle royale,” Speclizer said in a comment to the video. “Oh, there’s also an emote wheel script.”

We learned prior to the game’s release back in September 2019 that The Last of Us Part 2 wouldn’t feature multiplayer, but Naughty Dog has always argued that something would come to bridge the gap.
“When development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us, the team’s vision grew beyond an additional mode that could be included in our massive single player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us Part 2 would not have included an online mode, “said the developer at the time.
The statement went on to add that the mode had not been eliminated entirely and that the Naughty Dog team was working on a way to make it known to players separately.
“When and where it will be built is yet to be determined,” the study said. “But rest assured, we’re as big a Factions fan as the rest of our community and we’re excited to share more when it’s ready.”
