Water research conducted in an aquatic mesocosm structure
Calgary, AB, August 18, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Today, the Canadas Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) released a series of research reports summarizing 100 research projects related to land, water and barren areas. The reports highlight essential research to advance clean technology in tar sands.
There are four research reports in total, one focused on water, one focused on tailings, with two reports focused on land related to in situ (in place) and mining operations, respectively. The research reports, published on the COSIA website, are available to the public and, in particular, to academics and innovators operating in the space of environmental innovation.
The reports summarize a variety of environmental research projects and findings on tar sands. The research reports of the territory summarize the knowledge relating to areas such as soil and reclamation materials, revegetation and environmental research and monitoring. A focal point for in situ operations is reducing the seismic footprint with several research projects underway to explore different technologies that can minimize soil disturbance.
COSIA members work to promote a number of different innovations around land management projects, such as the competition we launched earlier this year looking for technologies that reduce the impact of seismic activities from tar sands. The initiative is part of our multi-year research and conservation efforts of woodland caribou, says Jack ONeill, director of COSIA, Land.
The Water Research Report presents projects that support minimizing the impacts of oil sands mining operations on the Athabasca River watershed. There are 11 active water treatment projects, one of which looks to SolarPass, a new technology developed by H2nanO, an Ontario-based start-up. The technology uses titanium dioxide nanoparticles and sunlight to treat the organic compounds dissolved in the oil sands process water.
John Brogly, director of COSIA, Water, says: A key area of interest in our research is trench lakes. In fact, pit lakes designed for the tar sands mining industry are the most studied pit lakes in the world with tests performed at different scales, ranging from the size of a small pool to an area of eight square kilometers.
The story continues
The tailings research report highlights recent advances and work in tailings management, from literature reviews and laboratory projects to large demonstration and commercialization programs. One of the research projects, dubbed Bugs and Veggies, is an outdoor growing trial aimed at determining whether combining bacterial communities with native plant species could lead to a technology that improves plants’ ability to remove water from sterile.
Lucas Barr, COSIA Director, Tailings says, “Our members are actively developing new and improved technology to mitigate the buildup of tailings fluids and fine particles in tailings ponds. The goal is to reduce the amount of time required to obtain a reclaimed landscape.
COSIA members are working to accelerate the pace of environmental performance in tar sands by sharing expertise, resources, technologies and even intellectual property. Research reports are just one example of the innovative and collaborative work underway through COSIA.
