Splitgate’s sudden success saw studio 1047 Games struggle to pull it off. The Portal-meets-Halo arena shooter was originally slated to launch in 1.0 on July 27, but thanks to a huge surge in player interest brought about by an open beta available on consoles that has been moved back to allow the study to increase its server capacity. Version 1.0 was moved to an unspecified date in August, but now that version has been delayed indefinitely.
Studio CEO Ian Proulx said the game “will remain in open beta for the foreseeable future as the small studio continues to scale the popular arena portal shooter that saw over 10 million downloads in its first 30 days of open. beta”. According to the study, the number of concurrent players in the game went from 4,000 to 175,000 “in a few weeks”.
It’s a reasonable response to the game’s unexpected rise. The “open beta” status is unlikely to make a big difference for players anyway: Fortnite’s battle royale mode spent two years in open beta before launching in 1.0 last year.
“Looking at the issues plaguing game backend scalability, the process includes more than just managing server capacity,” said Proulx. “We are focused on keeping the game stable for fans and iterating on the simultaneous ability of the games in order to minimize player waiting times. We want to do it right and we want to be prepared for a large scale when we officially launch,” all the while continuing to improve the beta with frequent updates, additional features and server capacity improvements.
Even though the situation is constantly improving, you will probably still need to check the status of the Splitgate server if you are struggling to get into the game. The Battle Pass beta is still scheduled to end on August 24th, but there are big news on Splitgate arriving on August 25th as part of Gamescom.
