My PS4 Ghost Of Tsushima save is gone, I don’t know where

I heard that this time around it was easier to upgrade Ghost of Tsushima from PS4 to PS5, transfer the save and start playing. It felt very different from the struggle I endured to transfer my Avengers save when the PS5 launched, anyway.

Yet as I tried to launch the Iki Island expansion from the Directors Cut today, I was shocked to find that the game was making me replay the introductory mission, a disturbing sign. And then, of course, when I went to the main menu and tried to transfer PS4 save data, I got an error, it wasn’t anywhere.

I am not claiming this is a widespread problem, but this is my experience and I am really trying to understand what happened here.

Save data is not in PS4 local or cloud storage on PS5.

I plugged in my PS4 external SSD which was where Ghost of Tsushima was installed. The save data was missing and I get an error when I try to update and install the PS4 version of the game. It will not be uploaded for any reason.

The only possible place the save data could be, if it hasn’t been deleted in some way, is on my current PS4. Which was reformatted and given to my friend months ago.

Also, which makes this all the more confusing, I swear I have a memory of playing my PS4 save of Ghost of Tsushima already as one of the first things I did when I got my PS5, just to see what it would be like. and would play like running on the new system. Yet there is no save file anywhere, not locally, not on a portable storage device and, more confusingly, not in the cloud. I literally have no idea why all saves aren’t automatically transferred to the cloud, as that’s what I came across in Avengers as well. There are many games, but others just don’t make the leap for some reason.

In short, I have absolutely no idea what happened here, but this is the second time this has happened moving from a PS4 version of a game to a PS5, only this time there doesn’t seem to be a solution for that. I think my data is just gone. As such, I am skipping the island of Iki. I love Tsushima but don’t have the time or patience to play the old parts just for the new section.

Yes, I guess I could argue the case of Xbox Smart Delivery here, which simplifies all of this, but I’m too tired to engage in a console war right now. I really hope this isn’t a widespread problem, that PS5 version installs of the game haven’t somehow deleted PS4 saves or something, because I wouldn’t want that to happen to anyone else. I would say I take this as a warning, but I don’t even know what I’m warning against, because I don’t really know what happened here.

Enjoy the expansion. I guess I’m just out of luck.
