Voice chat is coming to Roblox – TechCrunch

As one of the first in the race to build the metaverse, Roblox is thinking ahead of what virtual worlds really need. And while the platform has had no shortage of growth in its current path as of July, it has boasted 47 million daily active users looking to chart a course to deeper and richer virtual experiences that will keep people coming back for years to come. .

To that end, Roblox is taking careful but decisive steps towards incorporating voice chat into the core experience of the platform. The first move: Invite a group of trusted developers to explore how to integrate proximity-based audio into the hugely popular experiences beating at the heart of the platform, from relaxing and vaporwavey games to kickflips in a Vans-sponsored skatepark.

With spatial audio, users will be able to talk to other people nearby via live voice chat. Roblox sees its new voice product as a natural extension of the way text chat works now, but instead of text bubbles appearing over an avatar’s head, visible to anyone around them, players will be able to speak naturally with other people you bump into.

Let’s say you’re going out to a virtual skatepark in Roblox with spatial audio enabled – the skaters in the half pipe with you would sound loud and clear, just like they would in real life. But you wouldn’t be able to hear someone walking on the sidewalk across the street, since it’s too far away. To have a private conversation with a close friend, you could break away and walk to a shop down the block.

As we think about the future of communication in the metaverse, we think it must be very natural and very similar to how we communicate in the real world, Roblox Chief Product Officer Manuel Bronstein told TechCrunch in an interview. But it can also transcend some of the limitations that physics and space create in the real world.

Bronstein joined the company in March, leaving Google to help realize Roblox’s particular vision for the metaverse. Before moving to Roblox, Bronstein worked on the product teams at Zynga, Xbox, and YouTube, three very different companies that are likely equal parts relevant to his current work.

If you think of the metaverse as the next incarnation of where you know I could go shopping or I could go to a concert, I could go to school, I think you have to be relevant to everyone in society and you both have to build the content, the rules. , the features that support all of those behaviors, “Bronstein said.” And part of giving the platform a voice is ensuring that our older audience has a natural way to communicate. “

Voice chat is very much on the way to Roblox, but that doesn’t mean it will pop up overnight and that’s by design. The company is inviting an initial group of 5,000 developers, all ages 13 and up, to try out the new spatial voice chat features in a custom Roblox community space.

We’ve put in a lot of nice features and places where they can chat and hang out and they can learn from the code we wrote for that community space. So a few weeks later or a month later they can put that into their experiences and turn it on, Bronstein said.

Bronstein points out that Roblox will take this process slowly, building new moderation and safety tools in parallel. The launch of the voice will proceed slowly, starting with the chosen circle of developers and gradually expanding from there as the company feels confident that it can create a fairly safe environment with its moderation tools.

I think we want to take it slow and we want to learn as we go through it, Bronstein said. We could start, as I said, with the developers. Chances are that soon after, we could go to an audience that’s over 13 and park there for a while until we understand exactly if all the pieces are falling into place before deciding whether to open it up to a younger audience.

To moderate its expanse of virtual worlds, Roblox uses a combination of automated scanning and a 3,000-person security team of human auditors. As in any social network, players can report, block and mute other players to make their experiences more comfortable. And since half of its player base is under 13, Roblox gives parents options on what types of age-appropriate experiences to allow and toggle things like text chat on and off. If voice chat got to the younger age groups, parents would be able to disable it altogether.

Roblox’s under 13 audience comprises a huge portion of its user base, but a surprising number of older kids and young adults are there as well. According to the company, 50% of its users are over 13 and experiencing the most explosive growth in users between the ages of 17 and 24. Roblox is attracting new users, but its core users are also growing and the company knows it needs to grow with them.

Regardless of whether voice chat is ever rolled out for younger users or not, Roblox seems well aware that maintaining a safe and friendly voice chat virtual environment is a challenging challenge. The company plans to rely on user-initiated reports as word spreads and is exploring other tools that could bolster those efforts. The company is looking into a few different tools, including automatic recording of a conversation snippet just before a user is flagged as a way to catch misbehavior for reviewers. He is also interested in expanding reputation systems that automatically limit users who have a certain number of strikes against them.

Just like any social platform, Roblox will likely rely heavily on user reporting, which disproportionately shifts the burden on users receiving hatred and harassment – an unfortunate result that no social company has adequately dedicated human resources to resolution.

Forward on the voice roadmap

Bronstein describes spatial audio as a component of Roblox’s vision for natural communication. The next step is integrating a persistent voice chat experience between experiences, allowing users who know each other to log out even when they aren’t doing the same thing. For anyone who has been paying attention to the company’s quiet takeover of a company called Guilded last month, this won’t come as a surprise. Although Roblox’s work on vocals predates the acquisition, Guilded will lay the groundwork for Roblox’s future vocal plans.

A Discord competitor, Guilded has likewise built a chat platform for players, doubling down on the competitive gaming scene where Discord has broadened its horizons beyond gaming. In addition to group voice chat, Guilded offers players integrated community planning and management tools that ease the hassle of organizing complex online social events, such as involving twenty odd players to raid World of Warcraft.

In the short term, Guilded has an incredible road map, we just want to continue with that road map and grow it without any hardcore integration at this point, Bronstein said.

In the metaverse

Moderation challenges aside, there’s practically nothing in the way of Roblox. The company went public in March and is now worth $ 49 billion, easily making it one of the most valuable companies in the gaming industry. Investors, content creators, and tech giants are going all-in in the metaverse, and actually, it seems like a pretty safe bet.

Metaverse is a term in vogue right now, but it’s more of a shortcut than an empty hype. When people talk about the metaverse, they generally want to evoke a futuristic vision of interconnected virtual worlds, online spaces where we can move, socialize, and shop indoors (for better or for worse, the latter part is key). Whether all of this will happen in virtual reality or not and when is a talking point, but in reality the interconnected part is the biggest challenge. In the age of apps, software was isolated by design. But to realize the promise of the metaverse, our virtual selves and our virtual things will need to be able to move smoothly through the online worlds.

Some companies are ahead of the curve on this one, and it’s no coincidence that two of the biggest, Roblox and the maker of Fortnite Epic, best known for their virtual worlds stocked with custom avatars, game economics, and a seamless social stratum. of continuity user-created content is being elevated. Those experiences and the ability to easily hang out with friends while doing things in them and elsewhere in virtual space, could end up being what the metaverse is all about.

Most adults can barely grasp the allure of blocky, suburban worlds their kids love to hang out in, but Roblox understands something fundamental about where life online is going. Or rather, where will we all go to online worlds like Roblox.
