It was not an easy time for No Mans Sky. After what can only be described as Molyneux levels of unrealistic pre-release hype from developer Hello Games lead, Sean Murray, reality collapsed hard when it was released in August 2016. It was inevitably bombarded with reviews on Steam. , and that legacy has haunted him ever since. Now, some five years and 19 billion free updates later, No Mans Sky has finally found the love of Steam with a mostly positive rating.

Steam user reviews have a strong prominence on any PC game store page. Rather than something as simple as a set of stars, the electronics store Valves shows in the text the average tone of how it is received, from Very negative to Overwhelmingly positive. But more importantly, it changes the color of that text based on the reception. Go to Mostly Positive (which means 70% or more of the reviews are favorable) and that text turns blue. Mixed is a dull yellow. And everything underneath becomes a kind of angry orange.

Try how you could, as a regular user of Steam, the semiotics of this system integrate into your system. It’s hard not to give an immediate judgment on a game before you’ve even read its description, just because of that orange text. (Oddly, I think it was thanks to me that Valve stopped showing these colors for games with very few reviews, as first a single negative review would have seen a game marked with the words deadly orange.) your shop is bad, bad news.

So congratulations to Hello Games, whose space epic dwelt in the torment of the Mandarin long after its colossally loud and controversial release. There is no longer the orange, not even the muted lemon, but now they find themselves completely in the blue. (Thanks to New Bloods Dave Oshry pinpointing the momentous occasion.)

And with that, I give them permission to start charging money for their new content. Five five-year-olds have desperately sought acquittal with 17 surprising free updates that have fundamentally changed the game. Just last week they added populated settlements, adding another whole genre to what was once just a space exploration sim. They did it. They have, against all odds, created a game that exceeds the expectations created by a deeply reckless hype half a decade ago.
