Infinite Halo
@ TigerCA123
Early testing of Halo Infinite continued to be a good indicator that the multiplayer feel for this installment is even better than 343, and perhaps the best series felt from Halo 3 itself.
It was fun, monitoring the conversation about the game and seeing the detractors find flaws. We can discuss things like time to kill or map design, but some of the more viral criticisms of Halo Infinite are just hilarious.
We’re a long way from the Infinite campaign demo that pretty much everyone thought was pretty bad, and while we were still waiting to see another preview of it, here’s what some people are complaining about now.
Tire Physics, the idea here is that GTA games can pop tires that flatten, rather than Infinites Warthog tires that completely explode. I feel like tires can actually do that, but here we are:
Palm Tree Collision, where a player is able to go through an object they probably shouldn’t.
Fruit Explosions, the tweet that started it all, comparing how you can individually shoot pieces of fruit in other games, but Halos fruit explodes all at once! Horror.
I’m not immune to the fact that these tweets come from CAPITALLETTERSNUMBERS accounts of console war soldiers who are on the lookout for controversy, although I find it rather amusing that Halo has now come to such a good state where this is what is used as ammo.
In the meantime, here’s what the real people making real video games are discussing, where there really are no such cross-platform rivalries between those making the games. This is a developer from Sony Santa Monica talking about how right Halo Infinite is when it comes to first-person gaming and how hard it is to do. It’s a whole thread worth reading.
The obvious answer to the Halo meme lacking detailed tweets is the fact that the game type and engine convey what you need to prioritize. In Halo’s fast-paced world of multiplayer combat, it doesn’t matter if you can shoot single fruits or if they all disappear at once. In fact, they don’t need to be interactable at all. Destiny 2 comes to mind as a game that essentially has zero destruction physics in its PvP or PvE worlds, as it focuses on how your guns hit enemies, not the world around you. And nobody seems to care.
We’ll see how the re-debut of the campaign goes, which I think players were right to worry about a year ago, given how it looked. It wasn’t a nit, it was pretty much the whole package. I expect similar improvements have been made there, but no, fruit physics is probably not on the list of priority fixes.
