Last year’s Festival of the Lost event in Destiny 2, the universe version of Halloween, gave players a seemingly useless gift: Ascendant Lens. Without obvious use, many Guardians have removed the item from their inventory, as players only have so much room to hold such items. But a year later, Bungie is offering a nice reward of goodies for fans who have held their ascending lens throughout 2021.
In 2020, when the Guardians were still conducting the often reused Haunted Forest business, they could stumble upon a secret search. After opening 45 chests with the special event currency, Spider would suddenly have a new search. But talking to the NPC on Tangled Shore didn’t send players on goose hunting whatsoever. No, Spider simply offered players the Ascending Lens. And it was absolutely useless for a whole year.

As they sit in the inventory, fans can see that the Ascending Lens reads: A focusing lens from the Dreaming City through which the Ascending Plane can sometimes be seen. Considering that Season of the Lost has to do heavily with Ascendant Planes and Dreaming City, it appears that Ascendant Lens was an elaborate and year-long tease or, at the very least, a happy accident that worked. thanks to the delay of The Witch Queen.
But when the 2021 Festival of the Lost kicked off on Tuesday, players discovered that Mara Sov, queen of the Awoken and a major player in Season of the Lost history, had new quest for patient Guardians. Talking to Mara while keeping the Ascending Lens in your inventory offers a wall of text titled: Ascending Lens. Mara basically tells the Guardians that the tool is useless in their hands, but very powerful in the hands of a Techeun, some kind of awakened witch. He then hands the player a bag of Halloween goodies and tells them to leave.

The Bottomless Goody Bag contains some special materials, three rolls of the new Jurassic Green Pulse Rifle, and 21 Spectral Pages that give players who are looking to complete the Festival of the Lost this year a big head start.
While it’s certainly not a new exotic quest or something truly exciting, it’s nice to see Bungie rewards Destiny 2 players who remained vigilant and believed something special could happen. And since Spider and The Tangled Shore are about to leave Destiny 2 in The Witch Queen, it’s great to have one last Easter egg involving the short-tempered Eliksni.
