The popular video conferencing platform Google Meet has introduced a new audio and video blocking feature that will allow meeting organizers to mute other participants. This will allow them to have an uninterrupted virtual meeting and prevent people from unmuting unless they are unblocked by hosts.

The feature will be useful in situations where people forget to mute the audio during meetings and thus will ensure the smooth running of video calls. It will also give hosts more control over meetings and allow them to decide the level of participation from the various people attending the meeting.

It is being rolled out in the Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals and Education Plus domains and is expected to join other Workspace domains soon.

Google, via a blog post, said: “The meeting organizer is the only user in a meeting who can use the ‘Mute All’ feature. Once all attendees have been deactivated, the meeting organizer it cannot unmute them. However, users will be able to unmute the audio as needed. “

He added that, for now, the mute all feature will only be available to the meeting host joining from a desktop browser. The feature is expected to be rolled out on other platforms as well in the coming months.

In order for meeting hosts on Google Meet to mute other people, they will need to follow a few simple steps. All they have to do is point the cursor over the profile picture of the person they wish to deactivate and then click on the Deactivate option. This feature will be provided to hosts by default so they can choose to mute people from the start of a meeting.

It is suggested that the feature will not be available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, as well as for G Suite Basic, Business and Nonprofit customers.

Additionally, this feature will be available for Android Marshmallow and above and iOS 12 and above. However, people running older versions will be removed from the meeting if the audio was enabled by the hosts. To return to the meeting, they will need to update their devices.
