Of the dozens of wonderful things added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in its most recent update, the most exciting was the return of the Gyroids. These noisy contraptions have rapidly proliferated in players’ homes and islands since last week’s patch, but a desiccated robot appears to have stolen everyone’s hearts.
Meet the Crumploid. Unlike the hilarious bong-like Whistloid or the maniacal and ruthless Wallopoid, this poor little boy is relatively understated. It’s pretty quiet on the sound effects front and doesn’t make any wild moves. Its key feature is that it is, well, ugly. As noted by PetrarchEleven on Twitter, the Crumploid basically resembles SpongeBob when he first visits Sandy’s waterless dome.
The immediate reactions to New Horizons’ Animal Crossing: Crumploid were naturally mixed. Some expressed concern about the robot’s well-being, while others were shocked to see it at the end of their blades. One gamer even described his Crumploid as “the one true skrunk”, a nonsense phrase that Urban Dictionary tells me means they love him.

New Pokémon Snap – Nintendo Switch
The delightful sequel we never thought we’d see 20 years later, we finally have more content to explore and 171 more Pokémon to photograph dancing and eating apples.
Yet despite the huge variety of adorable Gyroids in the game, more than one person has described themselves as “obsessed” with the tiny robot. Some even went so far as to say that they would die for him. As word of the Crumploid’s rippling brilliance spread, people began to get excited when they dug one out. The general air of worry and grief has since given way to a more positive reception for the dry little dude.
“If anyone gets the Crumploid in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and doesn’t want it, I’ll get it and love it,” wrote a Twitter user after the initial backlash. “He will have a good home. DM to set up a drop off or mailing or something. I love Crumploid. “
“EVERYONE WILL STOP. KIDDING. OF SWEET LIL CRUMPLOID, ”asked another. “IT’S DOING ITS BEST.”
Animal Crossing is a franchise defined by its cute aesthetic and good vibes, so it’s great to see the New Horizons community arrive on Crumploid. Sure, it looks a bit weird compared to the other Gyroids, but that’s what makes it unique too. If you found one, give him a big hug from me.
