Watch the Valves Steam Deck Developer Event at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, even if you’re not a developer

We’ve known for a while that Valve is offering developers a massive five-hour tour of its upcoming Steam Deck handheld game on Friday, November 12 starting at 10am PT / 1pm ET. Now, I was learning that you can come and watch even if you’re not a developer Valve is telling the press that anyone can watch the event.

The five-hour virtual conference will include discussions on hardware; games that will appear on the deck; how the Linux handheld can play Windows games via a Proton compatibility layer; an insight into the AMD APU that powers it from AMD itself; and, of course, Steam developer tips on how to make these things work in their favor.

The initial announcement made it seem like you had to be a Steamworks developer to participate, but the company made it clear today that it only applies to a final Q&A session (and maybe only when it comes to asking the questions – it looks like you can still look at it, too).

Valve is a giant force in the PC gaming space, but it’s also a secret company that doesn’t make much hardware, so there’s a lot of interest in any snippets of new information on the exciting new gaming handheld that may come out of the event. . Well, keep an eye on the news and now you can too.

I’d be particularly interested if Valve releases more tidbits about what else the AMD APU can do. When I got to experience the Steam Deck in person in Bellevue, Washington, Valves Greg Coomer somehow suggested that it might make sense in a possible future standalone VR headset as well.

Valve recently announced that Steam Deck has been postponed for two months. Small quantities were originally scheduled to ship in December, but now the first handhelds will arrive in February 2022.
