Babcock released a statement that read in part, “We sincerely appreciate the contributions Coach Fuente has made to our football program and the positive impact he has had on our student-athletes during his time at Virginia Tech. Even if he isn’t. never easy to make a change, I believe that for our football program to achieve the kind of success that is expected from Virginia Tech, the time was ripe for a new leadership of our football program ”.
Fuente joined the Hokies ahead of the 2016 season and compiled a record of 43 wins and 31 losses during that period. His best season was his first season, when the Hokies went 9-3 and finished first in the ACC Coastal Division. He was named post-season conference coach of the year.
Virginia Tech’s decision to end their partnership with Fuente means the school owes the former coach $ 10 million as part of a buyout. That number would drop to $ 7.5 million on December 15. In Fuente’s absence, defensive line manager JC Price will serve as interim manager for the remaining two games of the Hokies and for any potential bowl game.
Upon his departure, Fuente thanked, among others, the team, the coaches and the university in a statement released by the school: “We leave Blacksburg with many good memories, but above all our family cherishes the many relationships that have been established and that they will always endure. To all those players, coaches and staff who are still struggling, know that the Fuente family is always cheering for you. “
