With the Pixel 6, Google announced a big update for At a Glance that it’s been teasing since the reel of stuff you shared at I / O in May. At a glance it’s now set to get even more features justifying the new design that spans the full width of the Pixel Launcher.
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we have decompiled the latest version of an application that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we are able to see various lines of code within that suggest possible future features. Please note that Google may or may not provide these features and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. However, we will try to allow those that are about to be completed to show you what they will look like in case they are shipped. With that in mind, read on.
An update (version S9 -> S10) to the Android System Intelligence app (formerly called Device Personalization Services) for Pixel 6 reveals a series of strings describing the new “smartspace” features – which is how the app Google refers to A Glance -.
This includes features already active for Pixel 6 and other Pixel phones on Android:
Commute and departure time: see traffic and ETA Weather: current weather information Warnings: bad weather alerts Travel: flights from Gmail Upcoming: calendar events and reminders Job profile: calendar events and reminders from work profile
ASI appears to be replicating the glance settings page found in Pixel Launcher’s settings today.
However, the big development is the introduction of a number of other features:
In-store: Shopping lists and Google Pay reward cards when in supported stores Bedtime: Your next bedtime from the Clock app Connected devices: connection status and battery information for your Bluetooth devices Doorbell: show who’s at the door when the doorbell rings Fitness: Activity information from the fitness app Flashlight: Reminder when the flashlight is on Security Check: Countdown to the security check from the personal safety app Timer and Stopwatch: Timer and stopwatch information from the Clock app
We previously saw “In a Shop” in the Material You teaser reel, while “Timer and Stopwatch” has been released since the Android 12 Beta period. The big addition is the ability to see the battery life of your connected Bluetooth devices. , while integration with Nest Doorbells could lead to a prominent link on the home screen to the live feed or even just to list names directly.
Google allows multiple apps to integrate with At a Glance, including Personal Safety and Google Clock, while the Pixel 6 has teased the ability to see fitness activity, such as current workout stats. Finally, the reminder that the flashlight is still on will be extraordinarily convenient.
So far, we’ve only seen signs of this update on the Pixel 6. It may very well arrive on other Pixel phones via the new ASI releases. Google is likely moving At a Glance to the Android System Intelligence app for faster updates, while thematically it makes sense to have these upcoming smart features alongside Now Playing and Live Translate.
None of these features are active yet, and it’s unclear when they’ll be widely available or if Google will limit initial availability to the Pixel 6.
Thanks to JEB Decompiler, which benefits from some teardowns of APK Insight.
