AllianceTexas’ Mobility Innovation Zone (MIZ) has entered into another major agreement to solidify its status as a hotpost for the commercialization of the future of logistics.

Illinois-based ITS ConGlobal, the leading operator of intermodal terminals, finished vehicles and warehousing services, is organizing remote trucking operations at MIZ to explore how workers can train and operate heavy machinery remotely.

Built by Phantom Auto, a Silicon Valley logistics company that provides software to operate, assist and supervise vehicles remotely, the project will be used to improve safety, customer service, operational efficiency and resilience. The agreement with AllianceTexas is an extension of ITSC’s partnership with Phantom to develop worker safety and efficiency.

The ITSC container depot will be located in AllianceTexas, just north of Fort Worth. There, the “test field” will deploy Phantom-powered construction trucks to test operations remotely and train drivers remotely.

Phantom is behind a low-latency streaming platform that powers ITSC’s onboarding and training of new drivers. With its two-way dialogue function, the technology gives trainees in the cabin behind the wheel the experience of sitting next to a coach. On the other hand, trainers can see and hear everything that happens inside and outside the truck, regardless of the distance.

The same platform is used to remotely operate a truck, according to ITSC. The implementation of the technology at MIZ, according to the leadership, will be “a huge leap forward for the industry”.

“Over the past year and a half, we have seen the strain the COVID-19 pandemic has put on the supply chain,” ITSC SVP Rene Etcharren said in a statement. “To become more resilient, efficient and future-ready, we have accelerated our testing and launch of technologies such as artificial intelligence, remote operations and automation.”

A nexus of innovation in mobility

ITSC is the latest in a series of emerging leaders who have established themselves at MIZ to advance next generation supply chain technologies.

AllianceTexas encompasses 27,000 acres of planned space that is intended to move North Texas and the nation forward with the development of futuristic technologies for air and ground transportation.

Hillwood, the developer, has always had plans to transform the vast deployment into an AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone to develop and implement transportation innovation, from autonomous cars and trucks to high-flying drones. Hillwood wants to leverage the importance and national name of development to create a cutting-edge global catalyst for the future of mobility.

Three years after its launch, AllianceTexas is an anchor that connects North Texas to the global industry. It is home to Fort Worth Alliance Airport, one of the nation’s major intermodal hubs, and over 533 airlines.

Fort Worth-based Bell Textron previously launched its autonomous pod transportation operations at AllianceTexas, offering the first package delivery demonstration of a point-to-point unmanned aerial system. Autonomous trucking startup TuSimple also has an active presence, offering autonomous trucking operations that wind their way along the “Texas Triangle” freight corridor.

Other announced partners currently operating in the MIZ include Kodiak, ITS ConGlobal, BNSF, Phantom, Gatik, Deloitte and Embark.

In July, Hillwood announced a research partnership between MIZ and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) to fuel the next phase of research and development at MIZ. TTI will manage strategic initiatives, partner with industry leaders to scale and commercialize technologies, and serve as a think tank for new mobility opportunities at AllianceTexas.

“ITSC embodies the kind of pioneering company Hillwood has always envisioned leveraging MIZ,” said Russell Laughlin, executive vice president of Hillwood. “The ITSC operations at AllianceTexas clearly illustrate how the MIZ platform can accelerate the commercialization of next generation supply chain and logistics technologies, while improving intermodal efficiency, resilience and security.”

Despite the challenges, Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) are ushering in a new era of aviation.

Wing will operate a Dallas-Fort Worth drone delivery facility at the Frisco station development with a small number of flights starting this week.

Gatik’s new self-contained trucking facility at “MIZ” in the Fort Worth AllianceTexas will serve as the hub for its mid-mile operations in Texas. The company’s $ 85 million Series B financing will increase its fleet of 3-6 Class autonomous vans in new North American markets.

Five local winners received up to $ 200,000 in funding to deploy their solutions across North Texas.
