Google has improved its commitments to the Competition and Market Authority (CMA) on its “Privacy Sandbox” amid concerns that changes by the technology titan could reduce competition in the digital advertising market.

The competition supervisor launched an investigation into alleged anti-competitive behavior by Google earlier this year, following proposed changes to its so-called Privacy Sandbox, and a series of complaints, including from the Marketers group. for a Open Web, which argued that Google was abusing its market power.

Google had proposed changes to its Privacy Sandbox project that would have allowed them to remove third-party cookies on Google’s browsers and replace them with new tools for targeted advertising, raising fears that advertising spending could focus even more on the ecosystem of Google.

Google’s efforts to protect user privacy cannot come at the expense of reduced competition, CMA chief Andrea Coscelli said in a statement.

If accepted – continued Coscelli – the commitments we have obtained from Google become legally binding, favoring competition in digital markets, helping to protect the ability of online publishers to raise funds through advertising and protecting user privacy.

The Observatory will consult on new commitments until mid-December. If they were then accepted, it would mark the end of the investigation by the Authority.
