LONDON (Reuters) – Governments, technology leaders and policy makers have discussed working together to ensure the internet remains open and democratic and to improve online security through better regulation at a conference in London, a British minister said.

The two-day Future Tech Forum, which marked the end of the UK presidency of the G7 Digital and Tech, built on an April statement to create a more productive and resilient global economy with digital technology at the center, Minister for technology and the digital economy Chris Philp told Reuters.

“The conference was aimed at setting the future agenda for how we cooperate and collaborate on technology,” he said in an interview Tuesday.

“It was about how to make the most of technology, for example around the challenges of climate change, health challenges and solving global problems such as the digital divide.”

Britain is taking the lead in stepping up regulation of social media platforms with its proposed online safety legislation.

Philp said forum policy makers from countries such as the United States, South Korea and Finland wanted to cooperate in developing technology regulation.

“Most of the countries represented here want to strike a balance to make sure the benefits of technology can be fully embraced and realized, while protecting the public,” he said.

The bill has been reviewed by a committee of lawmakers, which is expected to report by 10 December

“We will go beyond any other country to regulate social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and TikTok,” UK Secretary of State for Digital Nadine Dorries said at the conference, which was closed to the media.

The legislation could result in fines of up to 10% of turnover for large tech companies if they fail to remove and limit the dissemination of illegal content such as child sexual abuse.
