The latest Google Docs update and Google Workspace improvements have been announced to help teachers, students and administrators.
The Google Docs update, aimed at educators and students, includes a new search feature to make adding citations much easier. In addition, a new auto-enter feature has been added, which aims to speed up repetitive work, a bit like using a smartphone’s auto-typing.
The Google Workspace update, aimed at administrators, allows you to assign SSO profiles to organizations or groups with the SAML partial SSO feature. This was already available as a beta previously, but has now been rolled out for everyone.
Google Docs update: new search and automatic insertion
The new auto-insert feature for updated Google Docs is to remove work from citations. This not only helps in adding the source to a document, but also ensures that the formatting is done correctly.
This is useful for both educators and students. While it will make life easier for students, it is important that they still learn how citations work so that the automated part can be checked properly.

The process uses simple drop-down menus to allow users to enter the necessary information to add the correct quote to the work.
In the citations sidebar, select the plus icon that says “Add citation source” and choose the source and how to access it, perhaps via a web link URL or an ISBN book number. Then enter or edit the source information after it is filled in the fields.
For in-text quotes, leave the cursor where you want to place it, hover over the quote in the sidebar you want to quote, and select the Quote button.
For a bibliography, simply place the cursor where you want it to appear, then in the citations sidebar, click Insert Bibliography. Simple.

The new Google Workspace update is aimed at administrators with the goal of simplifying the SSO setup process. Previously a beta offer, it is now available to everyone.
As standard, when you set up SSO with a third-party identity provider, this will apply to the entire domain. If, on the other hand, you want to divide users for authentication with Google, perhaps by suppliers or contractors, now you can do it.
The feature called Partial SSO allows you to specify authentication methods as needed. To do this, log into the Admin console and select Security, then Settings. Here select Configure Single Sign-On (SSO) with a third-party IdP. Then select the Manage SSO Profile Assignments option.
Both the Google Docs update and the Google Workspace updates have been rolled out and should be available on your device now or very soon.
