FFXIV’s Endwalker expansion allows male Viera to wear maid outfits

This morning, Square Enix released a huge list of changes coming to Final Fantasy XIV with the upcoming MMORPG expansion, Endwalker (no report). The collapse is a dizzying dozen details, but the one thing you should take off is that Viera’s new bunnies will thankfully be able to wear maid outfits.

Endwalker will launch in Early Access on December 3rd for players who pre-ordered the expansion and regular access to old Joe Schmoe on December 7th for everyone else. It’s the biggest update to Final Fantasy XIV, serving as the culmination of a story arc that began in 2013 with the overhaul of A Realm Reborn. But as today’s patch notes indicate, it will also introduce a lot of interesting and smaller things between epic storytelling moments and new classes.

Starting later this week, all Final Fantasy XIV players will be able to equip clothes from the Spring, Thavnairian, Housemaid, Loyal Housemaid, Butler and Loyal Butler sets, regardless of gender. This was done, at least in my one-track mind, to ensure that the upcoming avalanche of male Viera – a rabbit-like breed that was only female before Endwalker – could be as sexy as possible. Bunnies are one thing, but bunnies with cute dresses and frills and tights? Give this game all the rewards.

Another clothing-related change is the removal of belts as part of a character’s wardrobe. After Endwalker is released, belts will no longer be purchasable, equippable, or swappable, but will continue to exist in the game as a fun reminder of what they used to be. A new description applied to all slit armor will now explain that belts have become “obsolete” in the world of Final Fantasy XIV, thanks to “advances in tailoring”.

I’m also super excited about all the new monsters that Endwalker will no doubt require you to take down over the course of the story and its side quests, especially these two Cactuar moon variants. The former, dubbed “Slender Cactuar” by some in the Final Fantasy XIV community, appears to have been affected by the altered gravity of the moon, while the latter is a fabulously styled elite brand that players will be able to hunt during their space adventure.

That’s all the Endwalker stuff I find most interesting, but it doesn’t even begin to cover the stark and quality-of-life improvements the expansion is bringing to Final Fantasy XIV.

Aether currents in areas introduced by previous updates will be reduced and rearranged, making it easier to unlock the flight capability of your mounts. The window where players can combine skills has been increased. Breaking the healer’s limit nearly doubled its range. When traveling via Aethernet, a map is now displayed for easier destination selection. The party list will now indicate who or what is targeted by spells. DualSense controllers will now benefit from haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

Endwalker promises to be something very special and there are only a few days left to get our hands on it. Hold on tight, adventurers, as we endure the longest Final Fantasy XIV queues we’ve probably ever seen. At least you’ll have time to read through the full and massive list of changes.
