EA subsidiary Respawn Entertainment, responsible for games like Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, announced today on Twitter that it will be ceasing new sales of the original Titanfall starting today. Originally released in 2014, the game will be removed from subscription services, such as EA Play and Xbox Game Pass, on March 1, 2022. The servers for players who currently own the game will remain active indefinitely.
With Titanfall 2 still active and Titanfall 3 a possibility, Respawn saw fit to conclude that the game universe will continue “into Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends, and into the future”.
The full text of the declaration reads as follows:
Pilots,
Titanfall is part of our DNA at Respawn. It’s a game that showed the studio’s ambitions when it was first released over 7 years ago and continues to be a beacon of innovation that we strive for across all of our games.
We have decided to discontinue new sales of the original Titanfall game starting today and will be removing the game from subscription services on March 1, 2022. However, we will keep the servers active for the dedicated fanbase that continues to play and those who own the game. and they are trying to join a game.
Rest assured, Titanfall is the heart of Respawns DNA and this incredible universe will continue. Today in Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends, and in the future. This franchise is a North Star for the caliber of experiences we will continue to create here at Respawn.
Thanks from all the Respawn team
The response in their replies and retweets of quotes was far from favorable for most. This has come mainly through players pointing out the poor state of the servers and people using game-folding exploits in the sequel Titanfall 2, or expressing dismay that all of Respawn’s focus will be on Apex Legends. We can’t speculate on what Respawn will do, but this looks like a familiar hit for EA.
The internal calculation on this move has undoubtedly been rigorous, but with no immediate promises of improvements elsewhere, the only bright side is that the servers remain active. It would have been kind and fair of Respawn to give more than a moment’s notice, but often companies are neither kind nor fair.
