According to respected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is planning an entire revamp of its Apple Watch lineup for 2022, including an update for the Apple Watch SE and a new Apple Watch with a rugged design aimed at sports athletes.
Writing in the latest installment of his Power On newsletter, Gurman said that for 2022, along with the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple is planning an update for the Apple Watch SE. The Apple Watch SE was released in September 2020 and has served as a mid-tier option for customers ever since. The Apple Watch SE features the same design as the Apple Watch Series 6 but lacks advanced features such as an always-on display, blood oxygen sensor, and ECG functionality.
Apple does not typically update its “SE” devices, such as the iPhone SE, for several years. Given that Apple hasn’t announced an update this year, it is to be assumed that a new model can be expected for 2022. Gurman did not say what can be expected of the new Apple Watch SE, but it could include a slightly modified design and functions. for extra health on par with high-end models.
In addition to an update to the current Apple Watch SE, Apple is planning a completely new Apple Watch aimed at sports athletes. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple had recently been considering launching a rugged version of the Apple Watch with increased durability. The new Apple Watch, according to Gurman, will feature a “rugged” design that could feature a case more resistant to scratches, dings, drops and more.
Prior to its official presentation, rumors and reports confidently suggested that the Apple Watch Series 7 would have a flat design. These rumors did not come true and the “Apple Watch Series 7” turned out to feature a more curved design. Those rumors, however, may have been referring to the “robust” Apple Watch allegedly in the works, however, which remains purely speculative.
Apple currently collaborates with Nike on special Apple Watch Series 7 and SE models that feature a unique dial and are paired with special bands. These models feature the same design and durability as the standard Apple Watch.
The current Apple Watch lineup includes Apple Watch Series 7, Apple Watch SE, and 2017 Apple Watch Series 3. Apple is now rumored to be planning to expand the range to more customer demographics in 2022, such as athletes who may have so far he has decided not to buy an Apple Watch due to its durability.
