Samsung could make a rollable smartwatch, a new patent suggests

Samsung recently created a new microsite for Samsung Display, which reveals the next generation technology developed by the company.

The site showcases the company’s rollable, foldable and sliding OLED displays for smartphones, tablets and even laptops.

Now, it appears Samsung is working on incorporating display technology into smartwatches.

A new patent, first discovered by LetsGoDigital, has surfaced online, revealing a Samsung smartwatch featuring a rollable display and camera. LetsGoDigital’s Mark Peters has also posted new images in multiple tweets that give us an idea of ​​the patent.

The 96-page patent is said to have been filed with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) on June 2, 2021.

Patented, users will be able to extend the display by pressing the crown of the device or by using a function on the touch-screen.

Extending the smartwatch screen will result in expanding the outer frame of the watch. This will allow the additional screen space to be rolled up inside the watch body to unfold, resulting in screen expansion by up to 40%.

A drawing on the patent appears to depict a user looking at what appears to be Marvel’s Thor on the watch. The display’s extend and retract mechanism doesn’t seem to hinder the camera, which could make the device a good choice for clicking selfies on the go.

For now, Samsung hasn’t revealed any specifics of the rollable display smartwatch. It’s important to note that companies often file patents that are never actually made, so it’s best to soak up this information with a grain of salt.
