School Threat Survey Delayed By Google Response | The powerful 790 KFGO

WEST FARGO, ND (KFGO) – West Fargo Police Chief Denis Otterness is reviewing last week’s threat of violence at Cheney Middle School on social media and says the incident would likely have been resolved much sooner if there had been a faster response from Google.

“We had waited over 11 or 12 hours, I think, for a response from Google,” Otterness said.

Google responded with information that helped bring police to suspects, but not until after a press conference and after the threatened gun incident was supposed to happen in middle school.

Otterness had publicly complained about the lack of cooperation from the giant tech company.

“From a law enforcement perspective, when you are dealing with imminent threats and potential public safety incidents involving our schools and such, we need a much more timely response of 11 or 12 hours,” Otterness said. “Those of us in law enforcement expect better because our community expects us to be able to deal with it.”

The school threat was posted on both Google and Snapchat on Monday evening. The threat led to a thorough investigation and the students had to work online from home.

Otterness says Snapchat promptly responded to the police to assist with the investigation.
