This story is part of the Holiday Gift Guide 2021, our list of ideas, by topic, by recipient and by price, to help you discover the perfect gift.
Nintendo Switch’s next OLED supply is here, and it’s probably the last you’ll be able to take advantage of before Christmas. Fortunately, there are two simple options for getting a console right now: Walmart and Amazon both have consoles in stock for the list price of $ 349, with no additional subscription or additional accessory bundles needed.
Like its next-generation peers, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the new and improved Nintendo Switch OLED proved rather difficult to track down in the months following its release. Sure, these sleek handhelds are a hot item this season, but the biggest problem is the continuing global shortage of chips that has seriously hampered production, according to Nintendo, with little sign of change anytime soon. There have been a few sporadic replenishments over the course of this holiday shopping season, but they sell out quickly. If you’re still hoping to get your hands on one of these updated consoles, here are some of our top tips and tricks:
Whenever possible, try using a retailer’s app to place your order instead of your browser. Apps are often much faster than the website, and for best results try using both of them at the same time to double your chances. Be sure to read the entire order page, as many retailers have started implementing two-step purchasing systems to prevent bots from placing the order for a person. Best Buy, for example, makes you click “Buy” once to enter the queue, then you have to wait for the button to light up again to actually add the console to your cart. Don’t give up right away! If you immediately see “Out of Stock” during a drop, try refreshing the page a few times. Retailers released their consoles in small batches during restocking to prevent bots from buying them all right away. These staggered dips are known to last more than half an hour, so it’s worth staying for a few more minutes. Seconds matter when these consoles drop, so you’ll want to set up an account on the retailer’s websites so you can avoid entering your payment information and go straight to the cashier. While both versions are prone to selling out quickly, the white Switch appears to be the most popular thanks to its sleek new look. When refueling, the version with red and blue Joy-Con controllers tends to stay in stock longer than its white counterpart. It’s worth bearing in mind if you’re only interested in the new console specs and not the new look. Buy only from official dealers; if you see someone selling this console on Twitter it is almost certainly a scam.
The Nintendo Switch OLED sells for $ 349, $ 50 more than the standard Switch.
Nintendo Switch OLED vs original Switch: what’s different?
While there were rumors of a new Switch console with 4K graphics and major performance improvements, that’s not what we’ve achieved with the Switch OLED. This new Nintendo Switch has a slightly larger 7-inch OLED display that offers the same 720p resolution when not in its base and 1080p images when connected to the TV. Despite the larger screen size, your favorite Joy-Conts are compatible with the console. The new OLED is also available in two color variations: there’s a brand new one with white Joy-Con controllers and a white dock, and one with the traditional black color scheme and red and blue controllers.
