TikTok tests a PC game streaming app that could get her to tackle on Twitch

TikTok is testing new desktop streaming software called TikTok Live Studio that allows users to stream live footage from games and other desktop applications, according to TechCrunch. The software is currently being tested with a limited number of users in some Western markets, TikTok says, but its official page on TikTok’s site appears to have been removed at the time of publication.

If released, TikTok Live Studio could mark an interesting change for TikTok’s live streaming strategy. Rather than focusing on users streaming directly from mobile devices, it could expand TikTok Live’s focus to include game streaming, pitting it against the likes of Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming.

It’s super simple in its current state.

According to Zach Bussey, who shared the TikTok Live Studio screenshots on Twitter, the software is currently in its raw state. It reportedly supports both horizontal and vertical streaming and can draw footage from games, individual programs, mobile devices, and cameras.

It was previously possible to live stream from a desktop device to TikTok using third-party software such as Streamlabs, but a help page for the feature notes that access is restricted and by invitation only. There are also tutorials that use third party services like Loola.tv as a workaround for connecting TikTok with streaming programs like OBS. But even these aren’t perfect: a help page from Loola.tv notes that “TikTok streaming is currently disabled for most users” as of July this year.

It’s unclear when TikTok could expand its Live Studio test to more users. But if it becomes widely available, desktop streaming could bring much more variety to the platform’s live content catalog.
