When kids and adults alike flocked to the Nintendo eShop, eager to spend the gift cards they found in their socks, that excitement was quickly ruined by an eShop error screen. According to a report from Kotaku, the annual holiday wave has once again brought down the Nintendo Switch eShop.
We are aware that players are experiencing errors when logging into Nintendo eShop and are working to fix this as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and check out our Network Status page for the latest updates. Https://t.co/KnM0g7z7jn

Nintendo sent out a tweet, noting that the company is “working to fix the problem as soon as possible”. It also includes a link to Nintendo’s online service status page, where you can check for any updates on the outage.
As noted on the status page, the problems started to crop up around 4 a.m. ET. The company offers no further information about the outage, stating vaguely, “We are currently experiencing difficulties with our network services. Please try again later. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

In a timeline of outages shown on DownDetector, issues appear to have peaked around 9:00 am ET on Christmas morning, but have been on the decline since then. I was able to successfully open the Nintendo Switch eShop and download a couple of updates around 4:30 PM ET, so it could be a sign that things are starting to get back online.
However, if you are still having trouble with the eShop, be aware that the interruption does not affect any other online activity. You can still play online, but you won’t be able to purchase or download any content from the eShop, which might be a shame if you were looking to fill your new Switch with digital games.
Nintendo eShop was discontinued last year over the Christmas period, and the company didn’t fully restore the service until the next day. Nintendo even warned players that the eShop could get overloaded this holiday weekend and advised them to create a Nintendo Account before the holidays, which isn’t quite ideal if you want to gift the Switch to someone on Christmas Day.
The Verge contacted Nintendo with a request for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
