Google has now rolled out a feature on iPhones that will allow the Google Fit app to use the phone’s camera to measure heart rate and even respiratory rate. Introduced silently last weekend, this feature required users to place their finger on the rear camera lens and apply some pressure to measure vital signs.
To remember this feature was first introduced on the Android side of the smartphone world earlier this year and does not need internet access to measure a user’s vital signs.
According to 9To5Google, Google says it tracks subtle changes in finger color along with algorithms that take into account skin tone, lighting, age, and others to calculate blood flow.

Google warns that the measurements are not intended for medicinal purposes, however, as they take as little as 30 seconds to calculate beats per minute, it can be useful for checking for abnormalities while on the go.
Additionally, the front camera of the phone can be used to track the breaths users take every minute. Requires the phone to be held on a flat, stable surface so that the camera has a clear view of the upper half of the body. Google Fit then guides you through the process of calculating your respiratory rate, and the whole process takes just over 30 seconds to complete.
You can access the feature by visiting the “Browse” tab in the Google Fit app and then selecting “Vitali”. Once measured, users can decide whether or not reports should be saved in the Google Fit app. The feature is also available for iPhone 7 and iPad Pro users.
Google states that “these results are not intended for medical purposes and should not be used to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent any disease or medical condition.” Although he adds that these abilities have been obtained through adequate clinical trials.
