We have seen companies emerge from the pandemic crisis to become protagonists in many sectors. The common trait of these companies is that they are endowed with remarkable digital technological capabilities.

As digital skill makes or breaks businesses in this pandemic era, this year the Digital New Deal – an initiative the Korean government has been running since last year – has played a pivotal role in maximizing businesses’ digital capacity. Korean technology. Some of the participating companies have generated excellent results in many industrial sectors.

More than a year from the start of national policy, the Ministry of Science and ICT has selected 27 outstanding performances of the Digital New Deal and “Eight key players of 2021”.

The eight key players include Crowdworks, Modusign, Pluxity, Alchera, Douzone Bizon, Wisenut, Ubion, and i-Scream edu. The ministry recognized these companies for their great contribution in improving existing advanced data and AI technologies and applying them across Korean sectors.

Crowdworks revitalizes data markets in Korea

Among the eight key players is Crowdworks, a technology company that collects and processes data used for AI-based services. As part of the Data Dam project, a core component of the digital New Deal, the company has established data for artificial intelligence that learns how to deal with “deepfake” technology by identifying fake videos. In the process, it hired some 5,000 people to establish and review the data collected, which the ministry says has led to job creation nationwide.

“Crowdworks played a crucial role in building the data infrastructure and revitalizing national data markets,” the ministry said.

Pluxity digitizes the production process systems

Another key player Pluxity owns a “digital twin” solution that uses real-world data to create simulations that can predict how a product or process will behave. As part of the AI Fusion project, the tech firm has set up kiosks in Busan’s subway stations, providing digital dual-fuel services that help people determine the best routes to their destinations. From January to October of this year, the kiosks offered around 7,000 services, mostly helping vulnerable people, including people with disabilities and the elderly, to find their way. The technologically advanced system has made it possible to reduce people’s travel time on average by 25%.

“Pluxity has helped innovate process systems and infrastructure in the manufacturing industry, which has led to safer and more productive environments for the public,” the ministry said.

Alchera spreads Korean AI technology

Alchera is a leading company in artificial intelligence-based facial recognition. The company has developed solutions that identify faces in three-dimensional (3D) images that are recognized and analyzed by AI-based deep learning technology. They have implemented these solutions in facilities such as airports, improving the security and efficiency of gate access management.

In December last year, this cutting-edge technology made Alchera the first KOSDAQ-listed artificial intelligence company and attracted investments of approximately KRW 49 billion ($ 41.2 million).

Douzone Bizon makes workplaces ‘smart’

Douzone Bizon is a developer of e-business solutions based on artificial intelligence. Based on the collection and analysis of 1,840,000 data collected from enterprises, the company provides artificial intelligence services for the strategic management of enterprises involving, for example, accounting, human resources, logistics and inventory. Its solutions have so far been installed in more than 20,000 companies and have raised approximately KRW 500 billion ($ 421.2 million) from domestic and foreign investors.

“Douzone Bizon’s big data-based platform has improved business processes and management in an intelligent way. Thanks to technology, companies enjoy more efficient work environments and more secure data management,” the ministry said.

The list of key players in the 2021 Digital New Deal also includes cloud-based electronic contract company Modusign, AI chatbot provider Wisenut, and finally, e-learning software developers Ubion and i-Scream edu. The ministry praised the companies as innovators who have fueled non-face-to-face, AI-based and cloud-based technology across Korean industries.

“Next year, the government will continue to support the growth of Korean technology companies in the markets by investing an additional KRW 9 trillion in digital New Deal programs,” said Second Deputy Science and ICT Minister Cho Kyeong-sik. “We do our best to accelerate the digital transformation and further expand the remarkable achievements of the Digital New Deal nationwide and in many other sectors,” he added.
