Some Apple engineers have awarded up to $ 180,000 in stock bonuses as an incentive to stay

Apple is providing equity bonuses to some engineers to prevent them from switching to companies like Meta, Bloomberg reports. Last week, select engineers in silicon design, hardware, software and operations were advised that they would receive anywhere from $ 50,000 to $ 180,000 in stock bonuses, which Bloomberg says is “unusual and significant.”

Most engineers have received stock valued between $ 80,000 and $ 120,000, with bonuses provided as restricted stock units that are intended to accrue over the course of four years as long as employees remain with Apple and do not access you work at other companies.

Payments are not part of Apple’s regular compensation packages, which include a base salary, stock dues, and a cash bonus. Apple sometimes awards additional cash bonuses to employees, but the size of the latest stock grants was atypical and surprisingly timed, people said. They were given to approximately 10% -20% of the engineers in the applicable divisions.

Apple has told managers that bonuses could be provided to engineers as a reward for high-performing people, and is likely meant to stop companies like Meta, Facebook’s parent company, from stealing employees. Meta has hired around 100 engineers from Apple in the past few months, although Apple has also hired some Meta employees.

Meta is recruiting from Apple’s Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and Engineering divisions. Meta is planning to launch a smartwatch in the near future that will compete directly with the Apple Watch, and when Apple launches its planned AR / VR headset, it will compete with Meta’s proprietary Oculus virtual reality headsets.
