The metaverse innovation has brought with it some critical expectations and skepticism. Like any rapidly growing emerging technology, the parameters for its operation have yet to be fully established. This essentially means that those hoping to get financial returns from interacting with the metaverse don’t know what the investment looks like. Are they VR headsets, digital earth or a pair of Gucci sneakers that can only be worn with AR? Some might argue that the metaverse is a dystopian fantasy conjured up by game fanatics and tech titans. Facebook’s transformation into a metaverse-centric social media company only adds to this dominant apprehension.
With Facebook’s Meta rebranding costing the company around $ 60 million, it looks like Mark Zuckerberg may be involved in something. Given that Instagram boasts a billion monthly users, it would be wise to assume that the metaverse can have a significant impact on our lives in the near future, just like social media does. Just like the early days of social media, the impact of the metaverse is limited by its rate of progression. Soon, however, this progression will lead to a transformative era of the industry, influenced by a variety of decentralized tools such as DeFi, cryptocurrencies, NFT and Web3. Once the power of these technologies is fully realized, life as we know it will change forever.
What is a metaverse?

The word “metaverse” was coined in Snow Crash, a 1992 novel by Neal Stephenson. In its representation, users could immerse themselves in a digital world through the use of specially designed headphones and glasses. This digital world has created a space where users can interact with each other, trade goods and essentially live a double life through virtual reality. The 21st century metaverse predictions describe absolute similarities to Stephenson’s imagined reality. The main difference is that the numerous infrastructural deficiencies associated with the metaverse in the fictional world have been addressed by using blockchain technology as a means to engage and interact in this new virtual world.
Since the release of Snow Crash over 30 years ago, the largest technology providers in the world, such as Facebook, have dominated the tech sector insurmountable. Google’s recent acquisition of Canadian company North to take a more modern approach to AR hardware and software could indicate the company’s plans for engaging the metaverse. Likewise, Apple, the world’s most valuable company with a valuation of over $ 2.5 trillion, is producing a currently unconfirmed and unnamed headset designed to act as an entrance into the digital realm of the metaverse. Organizations like these are not used to discarding funds on projects with no future.
The advent of NFTs offers a secure method of transferring digital assets from one party to another in a secure manner. Web3 offers decentralized interaction and connectivity between separate entities, underlying the decentralization of the metaverse. Cryptocurrencies and stablecoins provide the financial infrastructure suitable for a decentralized market. DeFi possesses the ability to bring fully realized financial decentralization into the process of transferring funds and resources into the metaverse. This would complement the network infrastructure, facilitating a vast digital universe not hindered by centralized intermediaries.
It is clear that the variety of companies, individuals and entities that could potentially operate in the metaverse is vast. The widespread use and acceptance of decentralization through the growth of cryptocurrencies, NFTs and DeFi indicate a fully realized future that operates outside the parameters of today’s established markets.
Evidently, therefore, the metaverse is not a science fiction fantasy evoked in a dystopian novel, but a more tangible and natural progression for the current internet structuring. The founding principles of the metaverse have already been introduced in many ways. Now its development is centered on blockchain technology and DeFi to push it from the conceptual phase to the implementation phase. This development will allow us to firmly realize the true extent to which the metaverse will impact our lives.
The gaming industry is one such sector that will greatly benefit from developments arising in the metaverse. In-game skins, which are in-game avatar outfits, are expected to trade at a level of $ 40 billion annually. 81% of players aware of these skins want to exchange them for real money, according to a report by DMarket. Currently, there is no method to transfer skins between game universes or exchange them for currency. In the metaverse, however, since each separate game universe is connected via a decentralized economy, this would be possible. Using metaverse-based banks would also allow for transactions like these.
As in the gaming industry, many sectors and industries will benefit from metaverse-related financing and asset transfers. Just like the bankless barter system that precludes our current financial structure, the metaverse will reach its maximum potential, along with fully operational and functioning digital banks. This is now possible thanks to the advent and expansion of decentralized finance (DeFi). As the current banking infrastructure increasingly separates from cash and physical establishments, DeFi will be the financial model that will facilitate financing across the metaverse.
To operate effectively in the metaverse and offer a standard practice for the transfer of digital assets, banks will need to be decentralized. As continuous innovations are made and more industries shift their operations into the metaverse, the likelihood of DeFi-enabled banks becoming a compelling growth development. Centralized banking systems simply cannot operate in the metaverse, which means that the expansion and increased sophistication of industries such as gaming will fuel the drive towards DeFi-enabled banking services, which will support the financial structure of the metaverse.
This will open up a multitude of benefits for industries, technologists and digital enthusiasts as innovation is driven through the metaverse. In gaming, for example, playing to make money becomes a viable and attractive prospect for both users and gaming companies. The introduction of the metaverse provides a concentrated arena where altcoins can be traded with game time. NFTs can be used to trade in-game assets, facilitating a new era of gaming and operating efficiently with DeFi-enabled banks. This too works to illustrate how emerging blockchain-based technologies will be used to facilitate user interactions across industries.
Dystopia or utopia?
It’s not just games and entertainment that transform and expand with the onset of the metaverse. Synchronicity, a fully functioning economy and the interoperability of digital assets, information and consumers mean that areas such as supply chain management, property sales and even office workflows will benefit from metaverse developments. As a concept and technological innovation fueled by the decentralization of blockchain technology, the future is in the hands of these industries, without the stringent parameters of centralized control.
Given the problems that have emerged from unregulated innovations such as social media, focused and consistent regulation is likely to influence the future of the metaverse. The OASIS consortium, for example, brings together industry leaders such as games, dating apps and immersive technology platforms to address security and privacy in Web3. Developments such as these are favorable, as the regulatory parameters of the metaverse are developed by those who have invested in its growth and expansion in a positive light for the end user.
It is clear that the related growth of cryptocurrency, NFT, DeFi, VR and AR will eventually collide to create the metaverse. Will it look exactly like the depiction in Snow Crash, a dystopian online universe where reality is no longer the central connector for civilization? Or, could the metaverse serve to deprive the dominant financial structures of today’s economy of the right to vote, taking power away from the intermediaries that have caused multiple financial crises? Nobody really knows. One thing, however, is certain: the metaverse is coming and will forever change the way we look at money, entertainment and society.
