The developers of Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin have already substantially ruined one component of their game: Jack is Jack Garland, aka Garland, aka the other big Final Fantasy villain who created that game’s 2,000-year time cycle and to eventually turns into Chaos. Final Fantasy Origin’s Stranger of Paradise producer Jin Fujiwara told Polygon in an interview that familiarity with the events of Final Fantasy will certainly provide context for Jack’s violent journey through the land of Cornelia, but it’s not a prerequisite. to enjoy its history.

“The game was created so that you don’t necessarily have to be familiar with the first original Final Fantasy,” said Fujiwara via an interpreter. “If you have an understanding of the original title, it might help in some way to expand the tradition you are familiar with. We have our heroes, who believe they are the Warriors of the Light, but actually turn out to be the enemy, Garland. When you are fighting the four different [fiends], the way they were born will be represented in Stranger of Paradise, so I think it’s not necessary, but it does allow for a deeper experience in the game. “

Given Jack Garland’s turn as the apparent protagonist in the antagonist Garland, I asked Fujiwara why the team decided to reveal his fate so soon and if Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is a tragedy.

“There is a reason behind all the events that happen. So once again, while it’s not entirely a tragedy, we want to get the feeling that this is a Final Fantasy title. So we want to have that sense of hope there too. It is very difficult to describe it in a few words. So we’d like to encourage players to try the story and find out for themselves. “

A new trailer for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, released Monday and partially set in Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” certainly alludes to the tragedy. He teases forgotten memories and lost loves, as Jack’s consuming anger will lead to regret and the final fate of the hopeful Warriors of Light. Fujiwara said the choice to use Sinatra’s overwhelming signature song, later famous for the cover of Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious, was illustrative of Jack’s journey.

“The story will portray Jack and how he lived and the choices he made throughout his life,” explained Fujiwara. “And so the fact that he’s living his life and making the choices he’s confident and won’t regret, we felt really in tune with the lyrics of ‘My Way’, so we wanted to incorporate that song.
