Google Cloud will unfreeze hiring in more areas across the organization by October and plan its top priorities for next year, according to a memo sent to staff Wednesday and obtained by Insider.

An email sent to employees, Brad Calder, Cloud’s vice president of technical infrastructure, acknowledged the recent hiring pause implemented across the company, and said Cloud leadership was still in the process of unfreezing hires for Q4 “for a few areas.”

“We plan to complete this process by the start of October,” he added.

Google said in July that it would pull back on hiring due to uncertain economic conditions, then later implemented a two-week hiring freeze. That freeze was quietly extended, although the company has been hiring again for critical roles across certain teams.

“Google Cloud has never stopped hiring. We continue to aggressively hire for critical roles that support our long-term goals and customer needs,” a Google Cloud spokesperson said. The spokesperson said teams at Google Cloud will decide whether to unfreeze hiring based on that team’s needs and priorities.

In the memo, Calder also said he was working with Cloud leadership to provide employees with “clearer prioritization across our top priorities” for 2023.

“We have too many Code Yellows and Purples, too many Horizontals, and we have some key programs where the requirements won’t be figured out until we get deeper into understanding them,” he wrote.

Code Yellow refers to issues that may cause business problems or outages over the next quarter, and Code Purple refers to problems that could become Code Yellows if not addressed within a year. Horizontals refer to goals set by executives that span across organizations.

“As we do our 2023 planning, I’ll be working with our leadership team to agree upon what our top priorities are, and how we manage incoming priority change requests, since this is definitely an area we need to improve on,” Calder wrote in the memo. The spokesperson said that color coding projects is “nothing new” and “has long been a way for us to prioritize projects.

CEO Sundar Pichai has also said he wants to increase the company’s efficiency and boost worker productivity. In July, he launched a “simplicity sprint” to gather employee feedback on areas for improvement, and has since started implementing changes such as reducing meetings and simplifying goals.

Google has also begun making cuts in some areas. On Wednesday, Bloomberg first reported that Google was slashing projects at its Area 120 incubator and asking workers to seek new roles within the company.
