The Cyberpunk 2077 saga will go down in the gaming industry history books, mostly for its exceptionally rough launch, but admittedly it turned things around quite a bit two years later before its first big DLC.

But there are some mysterious things that have been happening over the last few years, and now CDPR is finally opening up about some of the decisions that have been made in the heat of the moment, including the decision to ax a multiplayer Cyberpunk spinoff. . Here’s quest designer Philipp Weber talking to Eurogamer:

“We really needed to look at what the priorities were for Cyberpunk [after it launched]. The priority was for the core experience to be done for people in a really good state,” she said. “And essentially, the shift in priorities meant that other R&D projects had to be dropped. With Cyberpunk, we wanted to do a lot of things at the same time and we just had to really focus and say, “Okay, what’s the important part?” Yeah, we’re going to do that part really well.'”

This decision was made last year when it was announced that a multiplayer spin-off of Cyberpunk 2077 would no longer be made. Instead, multiplayer was said to be built into many of CDPR’s future projects from the start. Later, a full sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 was announced, so you can connect the dots that it seems likely that a new game will integrate some form of multiplayer from the get-go. I feel CDPR’s initial plan for Cyberpunk was to split it like GTA 5 and GTA Online, two separate games sharing the same world. You can see the appeal, as GTA Online has been Rockstar’s cash cow for the better part of a decade.

But the game was just too broken and needed fixing, something CDPR rarely talks about openly here. So instead of working on multiplayer projects, they refocused on fixing the core game again, which they mostly did, and are now releasing single player DLC, leaving multiplayer for another day and another sequel.

I think a multiplayer aspect of Cyberpunk 2077 is a good idea. The game does two very, very important things right: it has a fantasy world that you want to live in, Night City, and it has great character customization, now that you can settle into it after the initial creation. Those two things alone are great building blocks for something that ultimately looks somewhat like a GTA Online-type living world. But it looks like something like this will be years away, as no, they won’t be patched into multiplayer until 2077 after the new DLCs come out.
