Google Chrome performs better on the desktop with these new efficiency features

Laptops and machines with limited RAM benefit the most

Google Chrome 108 is now available for users of all operating systems, including great new features that improve the browsing experience on mobile devices. This does not mean that there is nothing in store for users on the desktop. After all, Chrome is infamous for being a ruthless RAM and battery drainer, but Google says this behavior is improving with Chrome version 108.

Earlier this year, we reported that Google was testing a way to snooze tabs and push them to the background, freeing up memory for other system tasks. The feature was spotted on Chrome Canary, the developer build, but is now available as a Memory Saver in the stable release. This utility promises to reallocate RAM from cards you’re not using, so those in active use can deliver a smoother, more uncompromising experience. Google says the feature could reduce Chrome’s RAM usage by as much as 10GB, or 40%.

When you revisit the snoozed inactive tabs, Chrome will reload them. However, you’ll have the option to exempt some websites so that Chrome doesn’t snooze them when Memory Saver is turned on. This way, you can trust the browser to allow other intensive applications, such as a video editor or game, to use more RAM without closing and reopening any tabs.

The latest version of Chrome for the desktop also reduces the load Google’s browser takes on laptop batteries. If the battery level drops below 20%, Chrome automatically limits background activity and visual effects used by websites that show animations and videos.

You can now maintain granular control over both the Memory Saver and Power Saver features with the toggles to turn them off if needed, found under the three-dot menu in Chrome on the desktop. If you’re using a laptop or older computer with limited RAM, we suggest you update your browser immediately and try these new features to improve your user experience.
