The latest update to the Google Play System improves Find My Device support and more

Google’s revised changelog for the December Play System Update adds automatic archiving of apps, improved Find My Device support, and more.

Earlier this month, Google released a changelog for the Google Play System update for December 2022. We reported some of the changes, but also said it was only a partial changelog. Today, Google updated it once again, giving us a better view of all the changes and additions it has added.

Esper’s Mishaal Rahman was quick to spot the changes, highlighting the new entries on the support page, with the first being added for phones, where the Play Store now automatically archives apps when more phone storage is needed. Additionally, Find My Device will now support encrypted last known location reports using a new “privacy-focused framework” to come in the future.

Additionally, there will be two additions to Wallet:

[Phone] An internal function that allows you to check the quality of ID images during customer identity verification for Google products.[6] [Phone] Enable Digital Car Key (DCK) function on Xiaomi.[6]

There is no mention of the type of Xiaomi devices that will be supported. But Digital Car Key support will be a significant feature for those who will be able to take advantage of it. Hopefully, this will be made available to more phone manufacturers in the near future. For some time now, Google has been working on making digital IDs and licenses mainstream, and has been pushing for digitization since the formation of the Android Ready SE Alliance.

Now, it looks like having a digital ID on your Android phone will become a reality for some, with the addition of support for digital IDs and driver’s licenses for select states. Right now, it looks like it will only be available in Maryland, but we hope more regions adopt this feature, allowing those in different areas to go digital entirely.
