Due to life circumstances, I was left without an iPhone 13 and had no choice but to buy an Android. I’m a photographer and I can’t forget this tool to work. So I looked for a new terminal that would allow me to continue working as a photographer.

I have been a photographer for many years, since the times when cinema was not the fashion, but the only way to work. The transition to digital has been hard and intense. I walked right in after nearly missing a third assignment because I didn’t have one of those new cameras.

The irruption of mobile photography into my work was different. It didn’t become my first camera, nor do I think it is as decisive as many would have liked to see. I just see it as an excellent and measured business move. And one more tool that everyone should know how and when to use.

The change of mobile photography

A cell phone camera is another camera. Small and handy as the Leica was when it appeared in the 1920s, it allows you to carry all the tools you used to have to complete with a computer in your pocket.

Image quality is its Achilles heel. And the democratization of him, the loose end that he has. What I mean? It’s not the same to shoot with a mobile phone of over 1000 as with one of 200. Many will say that the same thing happens with traditional cameras, but it’s not at all the case.

With a very old Canon EOS 30D, for example, incredible enlargements of up to over 50cm on the longest side can be achieved without problems from a photograph taken in the moonlight. This is literally impossible with most of today’s terminals.

Of course, in good light, all mobile phones perform perfectly. The key is to get perfect lighting and knowing the limitations of your work tool to know when to use it or not. In digital photography, as many want us to see, not everything is black and white.

Go for a new mobile phone

When I choose a new terminal, I get carried away by how I use this tool. So far I haven’t had the need to work directly with him. My workflow, especially when they ask for immediacy, is to shoot with one of my cameras and send the jpeg over the phone for delivery.

For this reason, I didn’t just look for a phone with the best camera, only one that would allow me to send the file anywhere and quickly. In other words, in addition to having a good unlimited data contract, you can quickly manage all the data.

Before the iPhone I had a Xiaomi Mi A3 and it was impossible to connect it to Canon and Sony apps with cameras. It’s something that with the iPhone 13 I was able to achieve from the first moment. And it was clear that she didn’t want to lose him.

I work with my full frame cameras. I select the photos and send them to my cell phone where I process them. It’s fast and the perfect result.

The noise of cell phones

If you work at night, or in a dark place, cell phones still don’t have much to say. Especially if they are not high end. And personally I’d rather spend the money it costs on a new lens than on a device that I’ll have to replace, hopefully, in two years’ time. The goal is forever. And as it must be said by now, everyone has their preferences and I don’t want to offend anyone who does. It’s a personal opinion.

So taking advantage of the famous Black Friday, I bet everything on a Google Pixel 6a. And from what I see, I’m not wrong.

What led me to buy Google Pixel 6a

When I bought a cell phone, I looked for a good, nice and cheap one. The iPhone 13 was no better than my second-hand Sony RX100 IV, let alone at night. The DNG files were, of course, much worse than the .ARW files on the compact with the 1″ sensor.

Indeed, if you want to take full advantage of mobile photos, in cases where the light disappears, there is no other choice than to enjoy the artificial intelligence that we only have in jpeg or HEIC. Another thing is the Apple ProRAW format of the most expensive phones of the Apple brand.

New times with Pixel

Since I didn’t want to spend more than 1000 , I immediately looked at the input pixels. The camera is deservedly famous, the Android system is very clean and allows me to shoot directly in raw format if necessary.

And all thanks to the 12.2 megapixel main sensor and f/1.7 aperture, OIS mechanical stabilization, EIS digital stabilization for video recording, Dual Pixel PDAF focusing and a pixel size of 1.4m. And we can’t forget that it has the same Google Tensor processor as its older brothers.

It’s still early to tell if I’m wrong, but the first few weeks with him were perfect. The camera of this cell phone allows you to choose the RAW format and I must admit that everything they told me about its features is true.

But the most important thing is that I can connect it to the camera without any effort. With one of my two Sony cameras and the Imaging Edge app, I can quickly send photos to send in an instant.

Also, since we always need to develop them, I installed Adobe Lightroom for quick photo processing. In case you want something faster, I have Snapseed accessible, although I use it less and less to leave the Adobe universe.

And good news for me. Since I went back to Android, my Photopills account has been automatically recognized and I have access to all its features again, which are very useful for landscape photography.

It is true that my way of using the mobile phone as a photographic tool is not that of a modern photographer, as many think. But I’m a firm believer in having a workflow that works. And this is what works for me. That doesn’t mean I never take pictures with him, because I don’t have another camera handy.

Mobile photography is another way of photography. And it doesn’t make sense for someone to say it’s the future, that they’ve already foreseen it or anything like that. It’s just another camera that solves many problems for us, but it’s not the only one.
