Hydrogen harvesting startup wins sustainability award

Boson Energy, which harvests hydrogen from non-recyclable waste, recently won first place in a European competition celebrating all things sustainability.

Green hydrogen is considered an environmentally friendly energy source that can serve as an alternative to fossil fuel or even natural gas, as it does not produce carbon dioxide as a waste product, emitting only water vapor and hot air.

Boson Energy proposes using a readily available form of non-recyclable waste for hydrogen production. The Israeli-Swedish-Polish startup’s technology, developed in Israel, uses gasification to harvest hydrogen from non-recyclable waste and biomass in a process that itself has a negative carbon footprint, capturing a ton of carbon dioxide for every ton of treated waste.

Waste is something that is always being generated and always needs to be treated, Liran Dor, CTO of Boson Energy, told ISRAEL21c earlier this year.

We wanted to find a way to use that resource because we live in a resource-poor economy. People are starting to realize that they can no longer assume the light will turn on when they flip the switch.

For its solution, Boson Energy was awarded first place in the hydrogen production route in the Tech Tour Sustainability22 Flagship program. Tech Tour, an independent European network connecting investors, entrepreneurs and business partners, has held the event online and in Essen, Germany for the past month. It rewarded innovations in various fields such as renewable energies, energy efficiency, digital solutions and transport.
