Apple may skip some major changes with the release of iOS 17, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The report says Apple will spend most of 2023 focusing on its mixed reality headset, which has been in the works for several years and could arrive this year.

As Apple’s main focus is said to be the operating system for mixed reality headsets, the tech giant is reportedly reducing some new features in iOS 17. The upcoming software update, currently codenamed Dawn, may have fewer major changes than initially anticipated. The report says this will also be the case for iPadOS 17 and macOS 14.

iOS 16 introduced many significant features, but the software update also encountered some stability issues. As a result, it’s possible that Apple wants to focus on improving the stability of its software, instead of introducing more major changes, while also prioritizing the operating system for its upcoming mixed reality headsets.

While we may not see big changes with iOS 17, the report says the new iPhone’s hardware may still be impressive. The dimensions of the upcoming devices are said to be the same as the iPhone 14 range, but Dynamic Island will likely be available on all four models. Additionally, the phone is said to switch to USB-C and faster processors.

As for mixed reality headsets, Apple is reportedly planning to announce the new device at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The report claims that the device could be called Reality Pro and the operating system could be called xrOS. Some developers have already started working on apps for the new Apple platform.

As for the rest of Apple’s 2023 roadmap, Gurman writes that you shouldn’t expect many surprises beyond the company’s mixed reality headset.
