A new Chromecast with Google TV is in the works

New evidence strongly suggests that a new Chromecast dongle is on the way with Google TV.

In 2020, Google made a significant change to the Chromecast lineup, ditching the long-standing Cast OS in favor of using Android TV, or more specifically the recently revamped Google TV. Last year, that continued with the release of the awkwardly named Chromecast with Google TV (HD), which brought the experience to a more affordable price point.

Neither dongle was without flaws, with Google working to keep costs down through a minimal spec sheet. One of the biggest complaints filed against the Chromecast with Google TV is about the dongles’ barebones storage space, which makes it difficult to keep multiple media apps installed and up-to-date. Beyond that, the Chromecast with Google TV could definitely improve performance, as the dongle is starting to show its age.

In the latest preview update to the Google Home app, the company includes advance preparation for a new Google TV device, called YTC. Elsewhere in the code, it’s directly confirmed that this is indeed a Chromecast with Google TV alongside older models YTV (Chromecast with Google TV) and YTB (Chromecast HD).

Considering that Google has already released a lower-end model of the Chromecast, we think the company is slated to release something with a higher spec set to replace its current flagship offering. For now, however, we haven’t been able to confirm any specifics of Google’s upcoming Chromecast.

At a minimum, we’d like to see Google include more storage on the upcoming Chromecast with Google TV. The processor is also expected to see an upgrade, as Android TV recently changed its hardware requirements.

We’d also like to see the upcoming Chromecast include a second USB-C port for connecting accessories or extra storage. To do that today, you need to buy a USB-C dock/dongle with passthrough power, and that also prevents you from using Google’s official power adapter with ethernet.
