A simple discovery by a Twitter user recently sparked divided sentiment among industry insiders and enthusiasts. It all started with a click of a button from Tony Hill, full time owner of a niche site, sharing the names of big brands using artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to generate content.
While some looked forward to the changes that could occur, others were not ready to embrace what was to come. At the same time, the post reignited familiar questions about the use of AI in content creation, bringing debate and confusion back to the fore.

But Google finally stepped in, explaining its guidelines more clearly this time, ending the debate and confusion. What’s more? His answer could potentially change the future of search engine optimization (SEO) and marketing.
Is AI content against Google guidelines?
Google, the leading authority on information, has always been transparent about how it ranks in Search. It had previously issued guidelines emphasizing providing users with valuable and reliable information as the key to excellent results.
However, some creators often abuse this noble intention and prioritize top ranking above all else, resorting to low-quality tactics like machine-generated output, content scraping, and keyword stuffing that leave readers unsatisfied.
This policy, while helpful at one point, has left many confused about the use of AI in content writing, as its automated nature may have seemed at odds with Google’s guidelines. But, thanks to the initiative of Blair MacGregor, an expert marketing strategist, this problem has finally been hushed up. He shared Hills’ post and reached out to Google SearchLiaison experts John Mueller, who provided much-needed clarity on this matter, settling the debate once and for all.
According to Danny Sullivan (SearchLiaison), AI content is not against Google’s guidelines as long as it follows the people-centric approach. He also highlighted the anti-spam policy, clarifying that the tech giant will only penalize an automatic posting if it doesn’t take into account the quality.
Sullivan also adds that using an AI tool to write a huge chunk of content will never impact your search rankings, especially if its purpose is to help readers. In fact, it may even be elevated to Google’s first page results if the algorithm deems it to have the highest value.
Now that all is clear and Google is leading the way, brands eager to harness the capabilities of AI in their content can move forward with confidence. But wait; early adopters are already on the move. Let’s take a look in the next section.
Big brands meet artificial intelligence: a step into the future
Hill made an astounding breakthrough in web publishing and SEO when he came across a world-renowned financial website, Bankrate, using the power of artificial intelligence to create content. The article in question delved into life insurance for single parents.
Similarly, other brands have begun to leverage the capabilities of artificial intelligence in their content creation, such as CNET, a pioneer covering all things technology, and CreditCards, which specializes in card management.
While some may question the validity and quality of the pieces, these websites ensure that they undergo rigorous editing and revisions. In fact, visiting their pages, articles written by AI have short descriptions, along with the names of the team that reviewed and verified the content.
Metaroids, our news site also uses ChatGPT to boost content. The only difference is that we never trust its output at face value. And it makes the job probably 3x faster.
Also, in line with Google’s statement, some of that AI-generated content is currently ranked in Search. Just enter the right keywords and you will immediately see them on the screen.
As we’ve seen, the use of AI in web publishing and SEO is rapidly gaining momentum, and it’s clear that Google and other brands are leading the way. The tech giant is even rumored to be working on an AI model that could surpass the capabilities of ChatGPT, the legendary AI language model that can help with a wide variety of tasks.
The emergence of artificial intelligence undoubtedly has a profound impact not only in this sector, but also in other aspects, from cinema to fashion, entertainment and content creation, and even in areas that we never imagined, such as growing man-machine relationship.
It’s exciting to think about the possibilities we so well see, especially since the future is already here.
