A Google employee shares the experience of being fired at 2 a.m. just days after becoming a parent

A former Google employee took to social media to share his experience of being fired from the company just days after becoming a parent. The employee in question is Nicholas Dufau, Associate Product Counsel at Google. Dufaub began his post by describing his excitement and joy at becoming a father on Jan. 17. The next day, he received good wishes from his Google teammates. However, his celebrations were cut short after he received an email from Google at 2am on Jan. 20.

The former Google employee received an automated email informing him that he had lost access to his Google corporate accounts. He was shocked to learn that he had been fired from the company, which he describes as a team of “smart, driven and kind people” who had welcomed him into their Google family.

The former employee says he was assured by his team that Google was a company that valued its employees and encouraged him to take full advantage of parental leave to spend time with his family. He said he’s never been more grateful to be part of a team that valued him as a person, but the timing of the firing made him feel extremely expendable and naïve.

After being fired, the former employee said he received an outpouring of support from his former colleagues. They reached out to offer their condolences.

Google layoffs

Google laid off 12,000 employees on January 20, 2023, and this former employee’s experience highlights the personal and emotional impact of those business decisions. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has assured Google employees that management has taken the extreme step of laying off 12,000 employees to prevent the situation from getting worse.

After the dismissal, there was growing sentiment among employees to remove Sundar Pichai from the CEO position. However, in an internal meeting the next business day, Google executives provided details saying the decision was made suddenly and within a small circle to ensure safety. The company also made sure to offer a generous severance pay to employees laid off from the last round of layoffs. The generous severance package also ended up giving the terminated employees the title of “Golden 12K.”
