SAN FRANCISCO — Twitter faced one of its first widespread outages from Elon Musk’s tenure on Wednesday, leaving the site unusable for many and prompting an internal fuss to get the site back up and running.

The outage continued for hours and led Twitter to apologize to users for the inconvenience.

Twitter has lost more than two-thirds of its staff since Elon Musk took over the company last year, and the steep cuts have led many to wonder how long the site could continue to operate normally and what might happen if technical glitches occur. .

On Wednesday, that concern became a reality when Twitter said it was working internally to fix the issues. “Sorry for the inconvenience. We are aware and working to resolve this issue,” she tweeted.

Attempts to send tweets were met with messages stating, “You have exceeded your daily limit for sending tweets.” In addition to posting tweets, users have reported being unable to send direct messages, follow other accounts, and upload content about their timelines.

Website Down Detector, which tracks outages based on user reports, said: “User reports indicate problems on Twitter.”

While some tweets kept loading, many were from users who discovered a workaround for submitting their posts: scheduling tweets in advance.

Some of the services appeared to return late Wednesday afternoon as the disruption had gone on for over an hour. But problems persisted for many, as users refreshed the site to find that their notifications weren’t loading and older tweets were populating their timelines.

Musk’s firings, and the fallout from an internal ultimatum urging staff to engage in “extremely hardcore” Twitter or quit their jobs, have led to feverish speculation about Twitter’s downfall. When hundreds of people left the company after refusing to commit to Musk’s pledge, many departments, including those running core functions, were understaffed, with as few as two, one, or zero workers remaining.

Musk bought the site for $44 billion in October, pledging to restore “free speech” and address problems like spam and bots, while garnering criticism of the previous management’s approach to content moderation.

A congressional oversight committee held hearings on Wednesday regarding allegations that former Twitter staffers made decisions favorable to Democrats in the 2020 election. At the hearing, power briefly shifted to Capitol Hill.

Even before the Musk takeover, employees had expressed concerns about Twitter’s resilience to outages. Twitter’s offsite data centers have been highlighted as a major vulnerability.

In a complaint obtained by congressional committees, whistleblower Peiter Zatko, for example, raised the possibility of overlapping outages in Twitter’s data centers that could prevent it from properly restarting its servers. Such an outage, he said, could lead to a loss of critical data and disrupt service for months.
