Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Recognizes LineVision’s Efforts with National Grid to Modernize Grid with Eason Award for Digital Innovation
LONDON, Feb. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — LineVision, the world’s only supplier of non-contact overhead power line monitoring systems, today announced that its grid improvement technology work with National Grid in the UK has been awarded the ‘Eason Award for Digital Innovation from the IAM.
According to IAM, the Eason Award for Digital Innovation recognizes “innovative advances in resource management in the face of current challenges and… good resource management principles in adapting to new technologies, advances in digital capabilities, and compliance competition, digital business and/or consumer trends”. IAM emphasizes that the award is for “those who are at the forefront of wealth management innovation and are pioneers or early adopters of new methods, theories and tools.”
Faced with increased energy demand and the transition to renewable energy, National Grid has partnered with LineVision to install airborne sensors and Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology on its electricity transmission grid in the north of England , which will expand the capacity of its existing overhead power lines network. The sensors will continuously monitor the lines applying advanced analytics to calculate DLR, providing National Grid with real-time data on grid conditions that will allow the utility to increase energy transmission limits. DLR is determined by the physical and electrical properties of a power line, such as size, resistance, and maximum safe operating temperature, as well as local weather conditions.
“We are honored to be recognized, along with National Grid, for this important work,” said Hudson Gilmer, CEO of LineVision. “By many estimates, we need to double the size of our power grid to meet electrification needs and the energy transition to renewables. And while we need to build new transmission, we don’t have the luxury of waiting the many years that the process will consume. LineVision can help utilities like National Grid accelerate their journey to a zero-emission power grid.”
